OC Martial Arts Training in Costa Mesa California utilizes the Art of War Training Program designed by Sensei David as a modern self-defense system rooted in Hapkido, enhanced with proven techniques and training concepts from Karate, Judo, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), and Kickboxing. Our goal is simple: develop well-rounded martial artists who are effective, adaptable, and disciplined—on and off the mat.

Our Foundation: Hapkido

Hapkido is core of our training philosophy. Hapkido translates to the Art of Harmonious or Coordinated Power. Known for its emphasis on joint locks, throws, kicks, pressure points, and fluid movement, Hapkido teaches students how to control distance, redirect force, and neutralize threats efficiently. We focus on practical application, balance, timing, and self-defense awareness rather than rigid patterns or sport-only rules. Hapkido focuses on principles of Circle, Water and Non-Resistance, with a base style of Aiki-jujustu with flavors of Kung Fu, Judo, and Taekwondo. This training program will eventually certify you as a black belt in Hapkido under the Sugi Hapkido Federation.

Integrated Training from Multiple Arts

To create a complete and realistic training experience, we supplement Hapkido with techniques and principles from other proven martial arts:

  • Karate – Striking fundamentals, body mechanics, discipline, and structured training for power and precision
  • Judo – Throws, off-balancing, and takedown control to dominate standing engagements
  • Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) – Ground control, escapes, and submissions for real-world grappling situations
  • Kickboxing – Footwork, conditioning, and effective striking combinations for confidence and endurance

Each element is introduced with purpose—not randomly—so students understand why a technique works and when to apply it. The goal is to provide a full mixed martial arts experience no matter where a self-defense situation takes you!
